Meet The Team

Mika Mulkey,

Communications Major

OUR STORIES

Aloha! My name is Mika Mulkey, born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii.  On May 17, 2014, I’ll be graduating with my Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Communication.  As a senior you’re faced with the question, “So, what’s next?” I’ve debated getting into local politics or continuing on with graduate school. I hope to make a difference in the world. I enjoy advocacy work and motivating others to take action for worthy and important causes. Taking COM344 I’ve learned a wide-range of topics that affects us all from the importance of growing our own food to the dangers that plastic plays on our environment. I’ve now become interested in obtaining a Masters degree in Sustainability in hopes to revamp the current system being implemented here in the State of Hawaii. I also hope to start my own non-profit organization to help educate and advocate for the greater good of our community.

Megan, 19

Biology Major

Aloha! My name is Megan Noelani Caoagdan. I was born and raised here on the beautiful Big Island of Hawai`i and have lived in Hilo all my life. I am currently a Biology Major and Communications Minor at University of Hawai`i at Hilo. I am a Pre-Medical student; however, I hope to do other things in my future that ties into communications… starting with joining the movement towards a sustainable future. While growing up I did not learn about sustainability nor was I aware that we were over consuming the resources Mother Nature had to offer. Now that I am taking COM 344 I am learning more about the little things I can do to guide us to a healthier, greener, more economically stable world and I plan on changing my lifestyle continue down a brighter path. In time, I hope to also educate my friends and family about the things they can do to also live in equality with our planet by taking care of it as it takes care of us.

Kirstie,

Kinesiology and Communications Major

Hello there! My name is Kirstie. I am from Oahu, Hawaii. I am a junior majoring in Kinesiology and Communications. In the future I would like to attend a graduate program in Public Health. I am interested in making connections between being healthy and being sustainable. I really like COM 344: Sustainability, Communication and Culture, because it has given me a better understanding of the negative and positive things are happening to our earth, government and people. It is important to practice sustainablity now, so future generations are able to live off this beautiful earth too! :)

Hi, my name is Nicole and I'm from Pohnpei, Micronesia. I took this course because I wanted to learn more about sustainability and how I can be actively involved in the transition towards a sustainable environment. To me sustainability means taking care of our environment and valuing nature and its resources. What I would like to get out of this course is to gain more knowledge about sustainability and how to live a sustainable life.

Nicole,

Business Major

TELL US YOUR STORY:

Kelsie,
Psychology Major

Hi, I'm Kelsie Kagoshima and I'm from Kahului on the island of Maui.  I'm currently working on getting my BA in Psychology through the distance learning program from the UH Hilo.

Living on an island you come to realize how important it is to be sustainable.  We can't continue to rely on getting what we need from the mainland or other out of state locations.
